Landec is one of the fastest growing providers of whole and fresh-cut specialty packaged specialty produce. The biggest driver for Landec's food business is its proprietary and patented breathable film and Breatheway® membrane technology. Breatheway packaging provides longer produce shelf life, lower retailer shrink and higher quality products for the consumer, all in conveniently packaged formats. The pre-packaged, pre-cut produce market is a multi-billion dollar growth market fueled by consumers' interest in convenience, nutrition and safety. Package atmospheres can be uniquely tailored with Breatheway technology to accommodate high respiration rates and compensate for modest ranges of temperature abuse, resulting in extended shelf life and higher quality taste, smell, and appearance of fresh produce.

Landec directly markets its proprietary packaged products for diverse applications in the rapidly growing fresh-cut segment of the produce industry. Landec has developed modified atmosphere packaging systems that incorporate a customized permeable membrane that is applied as a package label to both flexible film and rigid packages. Landec's Breatheway membranes regulate the transmission of oxygen and carbon dioxide gases in and out of a package at optimum rates to achieve high quality produce and meet shelf life demands of retail, club store and food service distribution channels. Since fresh-cut produce is a processed, living product, preserving freshness and minimizing quality degradation associated with temperature variability (or challenges) during transit is very important. Fresh-cut products using Breatheway technology are now sold in over 10,000 retail supermarket and club store locations.

Apio, Inc., a subsidiary of Landec, manages the food business through three business areas. The first is the value added business where pre-cut specialty packaged vegetable products are sold throughout North America under the Eat Smart™ and private label brands to retail, club stores and food service chains. The second is Apio Tech where Breatheway® membranes are sold for use with fruit and vegetable packaging solutions as well as large container packaging applications. The third is Apio's export business, Cal-Ex Trading which distributes and ships whole and packaged produce products to Asia.
